Brooke Park was laid out in the 1830s as the grounds of an orphanage courtesy of the will of a local businessman, John Gwyn. In 1901, another benefactor, James Brooke, left £9000 to transform the Institute and grounds into a museum, library and public park for the benefit of the citizens of Derry. Much of the original character of the park remains today.
Since the loss of the building (Gwyn's Institute), the park remains as a valuable green space, set in an area of largely disadvantaged housing, less than a kilometre to the north-west of the 'Diamond' in Derry. It covers approximately 8ha sloping steeply to the south-eat whilst affording excellent views to the City, across the Waterside. The Clarendon Street Conservation Area immediately to the south of the site contains St Eugene's Cathedral and much of the impressive Georgian streetscape which contributes positively to the character of the City.
Visually and practically, the site falls into two discrete areas. The upper section contains a play area, bowling green, sports pitches, tennis and basketball courts, a boxing club, youth club, and the Brooke park Leisure Centre with associated car parking. The slightly larger lower section contains grassed slopes and footpaths set with attractive trees within a parkland setting.
The main entrance to the park to the south boasts a sandstone gate lodge and an ornamental gate screen. A fine grey stone wall, generally in good condition, encircles the park except for railings to the northern boundary on Rosemount Avenue and at the main entrance.

The expressed aim of the project is to reinstate the character of Dixon Park through a process of restoration, conservation and management of events and activities. Physical works will include landscaping, the replacement of the bandstand and gates. There will also be a programme of events, activities, training and education which aim to restore the park to the heart of the community.
